At last! An accelerated recovery from the side effects of Prostate Cancer Surgery. A recent study presented at the 2009 European Association of Urology (EAU) 24th Annual Congress showed a significant, accelerated improvement in men recovering from prostate surgery who underwent pelvic floor muscle strengthening prior to and following surgery. Given that pelvic floor exercises are difficult to perform and that patients rarely conform, Wave Brilliance Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation is set to make a meaningful and important contribution in the lives of men undergoing prostate surgery. Our recommendation is to locate a Doctor who has a pelvic floor chair and receive 16 treatments prior to surgery and at least 20 treatments following surgery.
The Wave Brilliance approach:
Prostate Cancer Surgery - Incontinence & Impotence Side Effects Prostate cancer surgery can often be very painful, therefore treatment on the pelvic floor chair will not be contemplated for at least 6 weeks following surgery. Also, the recovery time following T.U.R.P varies from patient to patient and the success of the treatment will depend on the intervention administered. Be aware that prostate surgery may result in permanent impotence and a high incidence of urinary incontinence. The severity of side effects can depend upon the size of the tumour and the skill of surgeon. Some surgeons are using a new method called nerve sparing, which may reduce the risk of damage to the nerves that assist in blood flow for an erection and the muscles controlling the bladder. Even if surgery is successful, men who undergo a prostatectomy operation are unlikely to produce semen, but may experience dry orgasms. Wave Brilliance pelvic floor therapy can only assist patients post operatively when nerve has been spared during surgery. The neuromodulation produced by the therapeutic chair relies on stimulating (or depolarizing) nerves to produce muscle contractions and fatigue in the muscles. Over a relatively short period of time, this exercise, fatigue followed by rest, increases muscle tone (strength) and blood flow, much like going to the gym. Prostate Cancer Radiation – Incontinence & Impotence Side Effects Frequency of urination, uncomfortable urination and diarrhoea may be experienced as a result of radiation therapy used to treat prostate cancer. Radiation therapy can cause erectile dysfunction in some patients’ however the incidence is reportedly reduced with internal radiation as the likelihood of nerve damage is reduced. |
